During a pandemic the number of Intensive Care Unit (ICU) beds may need to temporarily increase to accommodate additional patients requiring support for severe illness. A surge in bed numbers demands a surge in skilled Registered Nurses (RNs). If there are not enough RNs with critical care experience available, then non-critical care RNs may be deployed to the ICU. Non-critical care RNs require ‘upskill’ training to prepare them for this deployment.
